[Thesaurus ENSP] VIOLENCERésumé : Les pierres ont une longue histoire chez nous : la minéralisation a conduit aux os, à la moelle épinière, au cerveau et plus tard au langage. Ils ont été notre premier territoire, refuge, outil et aussi arme. Ils étaient l'endroit où nous avons commencé à dessiner et à écrire ; nous les avons élevé comme des tombeaux et des charmes les transformant en symboles de mémoire. En les frottant, le feu à émergé. Les pierres ont-elles de la volonté ? Est-il possible de réfléchir à notre histoire du point de vue des minéraux ?
Nous sommes le 18 décembre 2017 à Buenos Aires, en Argentine. Il est 14h12, il fait beau, il fait chaud, et à l'intérieur du Congrès national un projet de loi injuste qui touche principalement les retraités est en débat. Il ya quatre jours, lors d'une tentative de révocation du projet de loi, une manifestation s'est soldée par une répression brutale d'une force de trois mille policiers contre des manifestants, des piétons en liberté, des journalistes et des représentants. Une fois de plus, le nouveau gouvernement insiste et déploie une opération qui tente d'arrêter la manifestation.
La réaction : des milliers de corps s'agitent, des bras avec des mains jettent des pierres contre les rangées de policiers. Selon la loi de Newton, si un corps exerce une force sur un autre, ce dernier réagit contre le premier avec une autre force de valeur et de direction égales mais en sens inverse. Chaque action a sa réaction.
Calcaire, marbre, roche, granit, béton, asphalte, brique. Trottoir, bancs, rails, carrelages, monuments. Ce sont les morceaux d'une ville démantelée qui s'animent et réagissent. Ce sont les forces d'une foule s'écrasant sur les structures de contrôle transformant l'inactivité en activité. Que nous disions ces décombres sur nous-mêmes ?
Une archive reconstitue quatre-vingt huit morceaux de cette action. Une sorte de catalogue géologique représentant les fossiles d'une civilisation possible. Les espaces vides de Buenos Aires comme lieux actifs de résistance : Plaza de Mayo, Plaza del Congreso. Les images utilisées comme des nœuds d'informations condensés qui migrent et transforment les personnes et les systèmes. Faire une photo implique une action, c'est une autre façon de filmer. Sur ces photos, prises à quelques secondes d'intervalle, on ne voit qu'une seule main qui tient, un seul observateur ; un collectionneur.
Dans la nuit de ce même jour, le gouvernement ramasse et enlève les pierres. Toute trace d'une bataille est cachée, ces corps étranges qui gisaient dispersés sur l'espace public déclaré le malaise. Over the past decade Arwed Messmer has been working with photographic documents from public archives, using them as the visual basis of his artistic work. In the Police Historical Collection in Berlin he examined the holdings of images taken by the police within the scope of their usual documentation during the student protests of the 1960s. These images, which are published here for the first time, show a different view of the historical events than the press images that dominate our visual memory to this day. For this project Arwed Messmer digitized over one thousand black-and-white negatives, editing them in a sequential narrative structure that breaches the boundary between photography and film. Initiated at the time, the makeover of the judiciary was finally completed by the Polish government in July 2018, strongly undermining the separation of powers in Poland. The photographic collection of the white roses that the protesters attached as symbols of non-violent resistance to the crowd-control barriers in front of the Parliament is banal and accidental. It echoes the simple, non-heroic gestures made during the series of demonstrations in the summer of 2017. [Thesaurus ENSP] TECHNIQUERésumé : Photographer Michael Danner documents in his body of work Critical Mass the architecture, everyday routine, and security systems of all 17 German nuclear power plants, as well as the radioactive waste repository Asse II and the Gorleben exploratory mine. High hopes and deep skepticism have accompanied the use of nuclear power up to the present day. In the euphoric mood that prevailed in the 1950s, everything seemed possible; people took part in an unprecedented economic upswing and found nuclear energy to be a fascinating technology of the future. But in the 1980s the optimism of the years of boom gave way to a skepticism that was further fueled by the catastrophic nuclear accident in Chernobyl. Anti-nuclear activism has now shaped the political consciousness of a whole generation. And the disaster in Fukushima in 2011 heralded yet a new era in the debate, it seems that a nuclear phase-out in the medium-term is now inevitable. However, the issue of the final disposal of radioactive waste is still unresolved. Danner's pictures give us a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the power plants, showing areas that are normally off-limits. His series is accompanied by historical photographs and texts that document the planning and construction phases of the plants and visualize the social tensions. The layout of the book and the cut through the front cover refer to the interaction of the present time and the past and the conflict between nuclear power opponents and the authorities.
