[Thesaurus ENSP] TEMPSRésumé : Nausea - tiré du titre du roman existentiel de Sartre de 1938 - est un ensemble de photographies qui enregistre les intérieurs des écoles publiques de Baton Rouge, en Louisiane et d'Atlanta, en Géorgie, de 1990 à 1992 par le photographe américain Ron Jude. Au-delà de la simple documentation, Jude nous incite à regarder à travers les fenêtres, les portes et les crevasses des murs dans des salles de classe et des couloirs vides, alors que nous devenons de plus en plus conscients des périls de notre propre regard et de l'incertitude de regarder. Nausea a jeté les bases des vingt-cinq prochaines années de la production photographique de Jude, notamment Other Nature, Alpine Star, Lick Creek Line et Lago. Au cœur de Nausea se trouve la prémisse que la recherche philosophique pourrait être filtrée et consommée à travers des photographies, tout comme elle est filtrée à travers l'œuvre de fiction littéraire de Sartre. Prenant comme sujet la banalité de l'apprentissage institutionnel, les espaces et objets monotones capturés dans Nausea servent de plate-forme pour explorer le lien entre les limites narratives de la photographie et la conscience. Utilisant un langage visuel distinctif, marqué par un sens aigu de la couleur, un cadrage radical et une mise au point superficielle, Jude a créé un monde à la fois familier et étrange, imprégné d'un sentiment omniprésent de malaise.

Alexander Chekmenev was one of the photographers commissioned to go door to door during this national campaign. And so he ended up in the homes of these people, along with the social workers whose more usual job was to provide free medicine and groceries. First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan’s pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan’s own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work.
Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices – both textual and pictorial – in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work. Emphasising the cinematic motion of the family’s home videos, the Super-8 film stills have been newly digitised and magnified, with select scenes running full-bleed across double-page spreads. Meanwhile, Sultan’s photographs of his parents as they go about their daily lives – against the quintessential backdrop of the Reagan-era American dream – are supplemented with previously unpublished images.
