[Thesaurus ENSP] VIE QUOTIDIENNENote de contenu : How can intangible experiences be represented? Aware of the creative power of taking photographs, on the one hand, and of its futility on the other, in the past years, Tobias
Kruse (*1979) has captured inexpressible moments in life: the shape of an object, the certainty that an injury is about to occur, the birth of children, and the bliss of their skin. He has concentrated them in an open, journal-like picture atlas that invokes the intensity of the present as well as the recurring loops of time. At the same time, the narrative is neither closed nor defined. The new publication again and again presents other references and meanings through the succession and parallel placement of the photographs. [Thesaurus ENSP] VIOLENCERésumé : An autobiography of Miss Wish is a tale about two lives intertwined, subject and photographer, working collaboratively to create a uniquely enigmatic book, which pushes the boundaries of documentary storytelling. It is a haunting, dark story of a survivor of sex trafficking and child pornography and her struggle to survive and find physical and emotional safety, to assert herself as an artist and narrator, and to craft a life while living in a state of flashbacks, trauma and addiction. Photographed over 25 years in London and then New York City where Miss Wish fled on the advice of Scotland Yard, the story is told through multiple narrative elements including the protagonist’s vast personal archive which was safeguarded by the photographer who assumed the role of friend and advocate. The resulting book weaves together this archive of harrowing drawings depicting crime scenes and flashbacks, hospital psychiatric reports, diary entries, personal ephemera and letters and text messages between photographer and protagonist. Nina Berman (USA) is a widely acclaimed photographer, member of NOOR images, and professor at Columbia University.

[Thesaurus ENSP] VIE QUOTIDIENNERésumé : The unusual quality of Rimaldas Vikšraitis’ photographs is that he gives us something that we couldn’t buy for all the money in the world: the feeling of being there. He offers us images of moments in his and other people’s lives, moments that may be true, crazy, disturbing or repellent – depending on who we, his viewers, are and how we feel at that particular moment. To let the viewer take part: it sounds so easy. But it is a great undertaking to maintain that lightness of touch despite the presence of the camera, and to let a valid picture emerge, particularly when the alcohol is flowing and you can almost feel the room temperature rising. [Thesaurus ENSP] INTIMENote de contenu : "What drives me to continue this work is difficult to name. It has more to do with love than with sociology. With being a subject in the drama rather than a witness. And in the odd and jumbled process of working, everything shifts: the boundaries blur, my distance slips, the arrogance and illusion of immunity falters. I wake up in the middle of the night, stunned and anguished. These are my parents. From that simple fact, everything follows.’ – Larry Sultan
First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan’s pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan’s own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work.
Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices – both textual and pictorial – in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work. Emphasising the cinematic motion of the family’s home videos, the Super-8 film stills have been newly digitised and magnified, with select scenes running full-bleed across double-page spreads. Meanwhile, Sultan’s photographs of his parents as they go about their daily lives – against the quintessential backdrop of the Reagan-era American dream – are supplemented with previously unpublished images. Most significantly, the book honours Sultan as the oft-hailed ‘King of Colour Photography’.Permalink : https://pmb.ensp-arles.fr/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=17414 Exemplaires (1)
